A Waverly man who was facing multiple felony charges following an incident on June 9 changed his plea and has been sentenced by the court to spend some time in state prison.

According to a probable-cause statement, a Waverly Police officer responded to a physical disturbance in the area of Old Bridge Road near Thomas Drive. During the investigation, it was determined that there was cause to arrest Brandon Shackelford.

Shackelford later led authorities on a short vehicle pursuit, resisted arrest and had to be Tased. Once Shackelford was taken into custody, authorities say he began kicking the back window of the patrol vehicle, trying to break the glass.

According to court documents, Shackelford was charged with felonies for domestic assault in the second degree; resisting or interfering with arrest for a felony; two counts of escape or attempted escape from custody while under arrest for a felony; and several misdemeanors.

After Shackelford’s guilty plea and upon recommendation of the state on September 7, the judge sentenced Shackelford to seven years on domestic assault; four years on resisting; four years on attempted escape; and 45 days in the county jail on the assault in the fourth degree and 10 days in the county jail on the driving while revoked or suspended charge. All of the sentences are ordered to run concurrently- with credit for time served.

As part of a plea deal, all of the other charges were dismissed by the state.
