The Boonville Police Department, along with the Boonville Fire Department, is scheduled to host a Take Back Day in October.
According to a news release, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 23, Boonville authorities will give the public an opportunity to properly dispose unwanted prescription drugs. Proper disposal prevents pill abuse and possible thefts of homes for potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs.
Persons can bring their disposals to the Boonville Fire Department at 500 Bingham Road in Boonville. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) cannot accept liquids or needles or sharps. The service is free and anonymous.
If you cannot turn in your unwanted prescription drugs on October 23, you can drop them off at the Boonville Police Department located at 401 East Morgan Street in Boonville prior to that day.
Authorities say this initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. Residents are now advised their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines — such as, flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards.
