During National Fire Prevention Week, the Pettis County Fire Department is urging area residents to check their smoke detectors.

Officials ask: Did you know that all smoke detectors made are recommended to be replaced every eight to 10 years?

Officials say this standard is for all smoke-detector manufacturers and the U.S. Fire Safety Standard. When replacing your batteries, they say check the date on your smoke detectors, which is usually on the back side of the detectors.

They say, for instance, if your smoke detector was produced in June 2016, it will be ready for replacement in June 2024.
