The Department of Natural Resources is celebrating Earth Science Week.

The public is invited to join Earth Science Week to gain a better understanding and appreciation for earth sciences and engage in responsible stewardship of the Earth.

Officials say Governor Mike Parson signed a proclamation declaring the week of October 10 through the 16th as Earth Science Week in Missouri. The governor’s proclamation recognizes the importance of water in our lives and encourages everyone to participate in the conservation and protection of water, while engaging in earth science

Events scheduled nationwide for Oct.10-16 will celebrate the theme “Water Today and for the Future.”

According to a news release, this year’s event will focus on the importance of learning how to understand, conserve and protect water. Individuals of all backgrounds, ages and abilities are encouraged to engage with the geosciences.

Focus days include:

  • International Earthcache Day on Sunday, October 10
  • Minerals Day on Monday, October 11
  • Earth Observation Day and No Child Left Inside Day on Tuesday, October 12
  • National Fossil Day on Wednesday, October 13
  • Geoscience for Everyone Day on Thursday, October 14
  • Geologic Map Day on Friday, October 15
  • International Archaeology Day on Saturday, October 16

Earth Science Week contests are scheduled to be underway. Categories include photography, video, visual arts and essay.
