The University of Missouri Extension in Howard County, in collaboration with Lincoln University Cooperative Extension, is scheduled to  hold a Backyard Laying Hen Workshop from  9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, October 16, at the Howard County Fairgrounds in Fayette.

Heather Conrow, MU Extension livestock specialist, says participants will learn basic management practices to ensure a healthy backyard flock.

State Poultry Specialist with Lincoln University Extension says, “Whether you have just a few chickens in your backyard or you have a bustling farmers market egg business, there will be something for you to learn.”

According to a news release, hands-on opportunities include equipment demonstration, how to check if hens are still laying and processing, candling and grading of eggs. Other topics include biosecurity and licensing and labeling requirements.

Pre-registration is required. Enrollment is limited to 30. Officials say an additional session may be offered if more than 30 people register.

FFA and 4-H youths are encouraged to attend. 4-H’ers will receive four poultry project hours for attending, says Conrow. “We really want to see the younger generations get involved in these types of projects.”

For more information or to register, contact Conrow by Wednesday, October 13 at (660) 248-2272 or hconrow@missouri.edu.
