A musical concert is scheduled to be held this weekend in Marshall.

A news release says after a year and a half of musical silence, the Marshall Philharmonic Orchestra is tuned up and eager to begin its 59th Concert Season on Sunday, October 31- featuring brass specialists Sara and Jordan Summers, Directors of Instrumental Music for Marshall Public Schools.

This admission-free concert is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. in the Harold L. Lickey Auditorium at Bueker Middle School. As per the current COVID-19 guidelines of Marshall Public Schools, masks will be required.

Conductor Kevin Lines decided that this year’s MPO season, following the absence of live music during the pandemic, should be doubly filled with hometown spirit with a line up of local shining stars. The theme, “Twice the Music – Twice the Fun” will showcase much-loved Marshall musical duos all season long.

Sara Summers is the director of bands for Marshall Public Schools. A Marshall native, Sara studied trumpet under Keith House and Dr. John Perkins, graduating Summa Cum Laude in 2008 from Central Methodist University. At CMU, she played principal trumpet and performed as soloist with the highly acclaimed Concert, Marching and Jazz bands, and was a member of the CMU Brass Quintet at the International Trumpet Guild Conference in 2006. In 2018, Sara had the honor of being recognized as Educator of the Year by the Marshall Optimist Club. She currently serves as President of the Northwest Missouri Bandmasters Association, President-Elect of the West-Central Missouri Music Educators Association and the Vice-President of the Marshall Soccer League.

Jordan Summers is the director of orchestras and assistant band director for Marshall Public Schools. Originally from Columbia, Jordan is an accomplished euphonium performer holding a Bachelor’s Degree in Instrumental Music from the University of Missouri-Columbia and a Master’s Degree in Euphonium Performance from the University of Texas at Austin. His accolades include being a three-year member of the Missouri High School All State Band, serving as principal euphonium in the John Philip Sousa National Honor Band (1997) and a member of the Missouri All-Collegiate Band (2000). He has performed extensively in Missouri and Texas and also at the Eastern Trombone Workshop in Washington, D.C. as well as at the International Trombone Festival in Boulder, CO.

The MPO board invites the entire community to come support and celebrate your local musicians for this special reopening season. This event is suitable for attendees of all ages.
