With ol’ Man Winter knocking at the door, the National Weather Service has issued a reminder that outside pets need some special care.
NWS officials say outdoor animals need:
1. A shelter with an elevated floor; dry blankets; and access to fresh, unfrozen water.
2. Shortened walks are recommended:
— Check your pet’s paws for ice chunks to prevent frostbite;
— Wipe your pet’s feet as salts and other chemicals can be poisonous.
3. Understand your pet’s warning signs (e.g., shivering, cowering, slowed breathing or mobility issues).
4. Never leave your pet in a vehicle- it acts as a refrigerant.
5. Protect your pet with a warm, dry coat.
