porch-pirates

Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals are over, however, as the holiday season approaches and online packages are being delivered area police departments are warning residents of sneaky porch pirates.

Porch pirates are individuals who steal packages from front doorsteps. The act is most common during the holiday season, when residents are more likely to be ordering gifts and goods online.

Authorities say there are some precautions you can take to avoid falling victim to this unfortunate act.

  • If possible, send your packages to your workplace. If you are not working from home, having your packages delivered to your job can ensure that you receive them safely.
  • Install surveillance cameras. While this may not stop porch pirates, having cameras can help you gain evidence of the crime. Some surveillance cameras also have the ability to speak to directly to criminals, and possibly scaring them away.
  • Have a trusted neighbor or friend to retrieve your package, if you are unable to do so yourself.

If you believe you have fallen victim to this act, contact your local law enforcement agency.
