An area high school football coach has announced his retirement from the position.

According to a news release from Smith-Cotton High School, Charlie McFail, head coach for the football program since 2017, has announced his retirement from the position, pending Board of Education approval.

School officials say he will continue to teach physical education at the high school and this spring begins his first year as head coach for the S-C High track and field program.

The Tigers had a record of 18-32 over McFail’s five seasons at the helm, winning the West Central Conference title in 2017 and advancing to the district semifinals in 2018 and 2021. A search for his replacement is under way.

McFail, an alumnus of the S-C football program, reflected on his lifetime of involvement with the sport.

McFail says, “Football has been great to my family and myself. Spectating, playing, coaching – it has all offered countless opportunities and produced some great memories that will last a lifetime. My closest friends are all connections that were made on a football field, either as a player or coach. Building relationships as I help kids grow personally and achieve goals athletically is what I will miss most as I have decided to retire from coaching football.”

S-C Athletic Director Rob Davis says, “Coach McFail was tireless in his efforts to help players improve on and off the field. He put his heart and soul into the Smith-Cotton Football program. His level of dedication to our school, our kids, and our community will be difficult to replace.”

McFail is looking forward to leading the S-C track and field program and discovering “new opportunities to replace the unending hours I devoted to football.” He added that he will continue to support the Tigers football program.

McFail says, “I am grateful for my time with Smith-Cotton football. I have had the opportunity to work with some outstanding kids and coaches while here. I wish S-C Tiger football the very best.”
