Late on November 17, a fire broke out in an academic wing of Marshall High School. The fire was reported and contained to one room, but smoke and soot damage sustained have made it not feasible to hold in-person classes nor use the carpeted area of the building- all the area around the island.

The south part of the building has been utilized in the last week, but students are predominantly learning remotely.

Over the weekend, Superintendent Dr. Carol Maher sent out a release that contained the results of air quality tests completed in MHS by Techtron Engineering, Inc.

According to Dr. Maher, Techtron only took samples “from where we are having students and adults come to school. This includes the commons, gym, stage and the music rooms.”

Dr. Maher adds, “They won’t test the air quality in the affected parts of the building until they get it repaired. That will have to happen, however, before students and adults are allowed in that part of the building. We’re still hoping it will be January 4. Unfortunately, that’s not a sure thing.“

Attached is a copy of the complete report.

Dr. Maher says, “Please note that the rankings are in the far right column and are all significantly under “4” except for the Art Room. The areas where faculty and students are working were scrubbed and cleaned prior to occupation. Also, air scrubbers have been kept in the area for extra precautions.”
