iga-building-12-7-21

Having sat vacant for several years now, an eyesore of a building in the 1500 block of South Odell Avenue in Marshall could be demolished soon.

During the meeting of the city council on Monday, December 6, Ward 2 Councilman Kirk Arends said he thinks while REMCO Demolition LLC is in town wrapping up its demolition of the buildings on the property formerly known as the Marshall Habilitation Center, it is a good time to lock in a deal for the demolition of the old IGA building.

Ward 1 Councilman Leon Thompson said it’s time for the dilapidated structure to come down.

City Administrator JD Kehrman made it clear the city will get its money back over time.

The up-front cost of the agreement is $130,000 for REMCO to remove the buildings and the parking lot all the way down to the dirt.

The council approved the first reading of the ordinance. A second reading will need to be approved at a future meeting before it will go into effect.
