By a 191 to 18 voting margin in August, Higginsville residents approved the city to issue its sewerage system revenue bonds in the amount of up to $17.5 million for the purpose of extending and improving the city’s sewerage system; including constructing and equipping a new wastewater treatment facility and pump stations; and acquiring land and rights of way devoted to sewerage service.

During the Higginsville Board of Aldermen meeting on Monday, December 20, a public hearing was held concerning sewer rates. After that, the board considered an increase to the monthly bills for residential and commercial customers.

City Administrator Jeanette Dobson explains.

Dobson says the board voted to approve the rate increase, which will be $15 to the base rate for all residential and commercial customers. Dobson said the new rate will go into effect and be on customer bills during the February 1, 2022, billing cycle.

In other news, the board recognized Brian Barnes for 20 years of service to the city. Barnes began working for the city as a meter reader on December 10, 2001. He is now a water/wastewater maintenance crew leader, a position he has held since August 6, 2018.

Dobson also noted city hall will be closed on Friday, December 24, in observance of Christmas Day; and Friday, December 31, in observance of New Year’s Day.
