Old Fitzgibbon Hospital in Marshall certainly has become an eyesore and subject of vandalism for several years now. However, possible funding for demolition of the dilapidated structure currently is stalled, and the Brunswick Project is still in a holding pattern.

Troy Nash, of the Nash Group, gave an update during the meeting of the city council on Tuesday, January 18.

Nash said the group bought the building a few years ago, with the intent of tearing it down, making way for some housing that is acceptable for the community. However, the cost of the demolition is nearly $1 million, according to Nash. He said the group has gone through the proper channels to try to get the funding to help, but a bill is languishing in the U.S. Senate.

Nash said the hope is that the bill gets approved, but it is scheduled to expire next month.

Nash said the group is still committed to the project. Mayor Julie Schwetz said the city remains committed to addressing the blight of the property and turning it around for the citizens.

The old hospital has sat vacant for the most part for more than 30 years since new Fitzgibbon Hospital opened in July 1991.
