A three-term Marshall City Councilman will not be running for another term.

During the council meeting on Monday, February 7, Ward 2 Councilman Kirk Arends explained.

Arends says he is not resigning. He will complete his current term, which ends in April.

Mayor Julie Schwetz thanked Arends for his service to the city.

Arends ran as part of the group called “Moving Marshall Forward”; and was first elected in April 2016.

Arends was to face opposition in the upcoming Municipal Election. Now, Tim Reeder will be running unopposed.

Five seats are up for election on the council.

Ward 1 Councilman Leon Thompson did not file to run for another term. The only candidate to file to run for that seat is Drew Green.

Ward 3 Dan Brandt and Ward 4 Councilmen Craig Thompson, respectively, are running unopposed for their seats. Phesa Wright was appointed by Mayor Schwetz and approved by the council to fill a vacant seat in early November. However, she did not file to run for the one year left on that term. In fact, nobody filed to run for that seat in Ward 4.

After the election, Mayor Schwetz will need to appoint a person- who will need to be approved by the council- to fill that seat.

The Municipal Election is scheduled for Tuesday, April 5, 2022.

Arends also resigned from being the city’s representative on the Marshall-Saline Development Corporation’s Board of Directors, effective after the meeting on Tuesday, February 8. The council unanimously approved the appointment of City Administrator J.D. Kehrman to take Arends’ place on that board.
