The Johnson County Fire Protection District is reminding residents about the importance of smoke detectors.

According to the JCFPD, on Saturday, February 19, Station 10 responded to a call of a fire alarm south of Warrensburg. An alert neighbor allegedly heard multiple smoke alarms sounding from a neighboring apartment building. The call was upgraded to a possible structure fire and Station 1 responded as well.

Officials say when personnel arrived at the four-plex apartment building, no occupants were inside their homes. However, in the apartment below the apartment that had the smoke alarms sounding, active fire was located inside of the wall. The fire was extinguished without further incident with minimal damage to the structure.

Authorities urge you to check the batteries in your smoke alarm. If you have questions regarding fire prevention call Johnson County Fire Protection District at (660) 747-5220.
