Team members at Annie and Abel Van Meter State Park invite the public to learn fire-making skills at a workshop from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, March 18. The “Back in Time, Forgotten Skills: Fire Making” workshop is part of a new series of educational workshops that allows visitors to experience some of the forgotten or lost skills of old times.

According to park officials, everyone says fire is easy to build, but few have tried it using alternative methods. This workshop is designed to educate visitors on the art of creating fire using such methods. The workshop will focus on several different building blocks of fire-building and will attempt to build “one-match” and leave-no-trace fires.

A press release states due to the nature of the skills to be demonstrated, the workshop is limited to no more than 10 participants, with the option for a waiting list and potentially other scheduled workshops.
