On Thursday, March 17 at approximately 7:20 a.m. Boonville Police officers, along with Cooper County Ambulance and Boonville Fire Department first responders, responded to a residence in the 900 block of Ravenel Street regarding call about a patient with a bleeding cut to the hand.
According to a news release, officers arrived at the residence where they discovered 43-year-old Ryan Brooks had suffered serious injury to his hand and abdomen. While an officer performed first aid, Brooks told the officer his injuries were caused by a “firecracker” which he made himself. Brooks was then transported from the scene to an area hospital.
During an investigation, authorities learned that Brooks accidentally detonated a homemade explosive device in the basement of the house, while he was in the process of making it. Officers seized precursor chemicals and other paraphernalia used in the manufacturing of improvised explosive devices – as well as methamphetamine and associated drug paraphernalia.
Authorities from the Missouri State Highway Patrol Bomb Squad, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and Federal Bureau of Investigation assisted in the investigation.
Officials say at this time no arrests have been made.
