The Marshall City Council met in special session on Tuesday, March 29.

The council first accepted the resignation letter from Mayor Julie Schwetz.

Mayor pro tem Dan Brandt read the current ordinance pertaining to this situation in order for the city to move forward with the selection of a new mayor.

Brandt then opened up the floor for nominations. He and Ward 3 Councilman Charlie Guthrey respectfully turned down any nomination due to work obligations.

It was pointed out, a decision did not need to be made during this meeting. Ward 2 Councilman Kirk Arends acknowledged that, but said the decision shouldn’t be a drawn-out process- one that should be made soon.

Ward 1 Councilman Leon Thompson made a recommendation to seek qualified applicants; and Brandt and Guthrey also offered input.

Toward the end of the meeting, Ward 1 Councilman Dewey Hendrix explained he would be willing to give it a shot if seeking candidates from the city doesn’t end up working out.

If you are a resident within the city limits and are interested in being Mayor, you are encouraged to submit a letter of interest including any qualifications you have at the City Office Building by noon Monday, April 4.

For more information, you can contact City Administrator JD Kehrman or City Clerk Julie Lewis at (660) 886-2226.

The person selected and approved by the council will fill out the remaining one year on Schwetz’s term.

Brandt will serve in the role of mayor until a new one is appointed.

The next meeting of the city council is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday, April 4.
