Several write-in candidates were unofficially elected to fill positions within city governments in Chariton County during the Municipal Election on Tuesday, April 5.

According to information provided by and clarification from the Chariton County Clerk’s office, despite two candidates being on the ballot before voters, they chose to elect a new mayor in Brunswick via the write-in path.

According to numbers from the county clerk’s office, Diane Rice received 99 write-in votes, which was nearly double the 50 votes received by Joni DeWeese and more than double Royce Young’s 46 votes. The latter two names were on the ballot. Rice will succeed Cindy Collier, who did not file to run for another two-year term.

Also, two aldermen seats were up for grabs in Brunswick, and Deanna Miles, who was on the ballot, received 106 votes for one of the seats. The other two-year seat was earned by Michael Hamilton, who was written in on 97 ballots. Lisa Pearson and Walter Hester were on the ballot and received 64 and 47 votes, respectively.

Nobody filed to run for two-year terms for aldermen in Wards Two and Three in Salisbury, so Mike Sorrells received five write-in votes in Ward Two and Steve Smith two write-in votes in Ward Three to unofficially be elected to those seats.

In the City of Keytesville, Roy Bennett received 48 votes for one of the two two-year alderman seats, and Cheryl Jackson was written in on 21 ballots to unofficially earn the other seat.

In addition, in the Village of Dalton, Lizzy Kalinka received two write-in votes for alderperson, as no candidate filed for the position. It is a two-year term.

The election is scheduled to be certified as official on Friday, April 8.
