Things ended early Thursday when Northwest of Hughesville hosted Lincoln in mid-season, Kaysinger Conference baseball action which was heard on KMMO-AM.
The Mustangs sent 19 batters to the plate in the bottom of the second when they scored 14 times, leading to a 15-0, four-inning victory over the Cardinals. Northwest had nine hits in the frame and was aided by two walks, a hit batsman and five Lincoln errors. The home team then ended the contest a little later when they tallied their final run of the day in the bottom of the fourth.
Nearly overlooked because of his team’s offense was the four-inning, perfect game thrown by Northwest’s Grant Burson. The Mustangs’ junior right-hander faced a 12-man minimum as only one ball was hit to the outfield off him. Burson struck out six batters, surpassing 100 for his career with one of his fourth-inning Ks.
Northwest scored their 15 runs on 11 hits. Eight different batters had at least one base knock for them. Six Mustang runners dented home plate twice in the process. Lain Tichenor, Owen Caton and Isaac Nieters had two singles each for their side. Lain Tichenor also knocked in three runs for the winners with Owen Caton, Nick Crosswhite and Grant Burson providing two RBI apiece.
Winning their ninth game in a row, the Mustangs did nothing to hurt their number-four ranking in the state in Class 1 baseball as they improved to 14-2 on the year.
It was a day where the visiting Cardinals used three pitchers and committed a total of eight miscues, leading to the ninth loss in their last 11 outings while dropping to 4-9 overall.
