Hubert “Hubie” E. Alewel, age 92, formerly of Concordia, died Thursday, April 14, 2022, at Sylvia G. Thompson Residence Center, Sedalia, MO.

He was born at home on May 31, 1929, near Ernestville, MO, to Henry and Mabel (Kroeschen) Alewel. He grew up on the farm and attended St. Mathew’s Lutheran School, Ernestville, MO, through the eighth grade. He graduated from Concordia High School, Concordia, MO, in 1947.

He married Norma Borgstadt of Concordia on Oct. 14, 1949, in Bowling Green, MO.

His newspaper and commercial printing training began at The Standard Herald, Warrensburg, MO, from 1948-49. He later worked at The Concordian in Concordia, MO, Hettinger County Herald, New England, ND, Columbia Missourian, Columbia, MO.

Hubert served in the United States Army from February 1952 to February 1954. After serving with the Army Engineers in Korea for 18 months, he returned to work in Columbia. In 1955, he began working for The Kansas City News Press and The Daily Record, Kansas City, MO. In 1964, the Alewel family moved to Chamberlain. SD, where he worked at The Chamberlain Register.

He and Norma purchased Register Publishing Co., Inc. which included The Chamberlain Register, Kennebec Advocate-Leader and commercial printing business over a five year period, starting in 1976. They expanded their commercial printing business in July 1984 and changed the name to Register-Lakota Printing. Their two newspapers were sold in 1991. In 1993, his daughter and son-in-law, Holly and Dunk Korzan, took over the printing company. In 1994, they purchased a motel (Alewel’s Lake Shore Motel) along the Missouri River in Chamberlain, SD.

The couple relocated in 2004 to the Concordia, MO, area where they owned farmland, they enjoyed rural living and being near family. In June 2019, they moved to The Arbors, a memory care facility, in Warrensburg, MO. They moved to Sylvia G. Thompson Residence Center in Sedalia, MO, on March 14, 2022.

While in South Dakota, he was involved in numerous organizations including American Legion, Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, Lake Francis Case Development Corporation, United Church of Christ, SD Hall of Fame, SD Newspaper Association Board, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Marquette Bank Board, Mid-Dakota Hospital Board and St. Joseph’s Indian School National Advisory Board. After moving to Missouri, he continued his community involvement. He was a member of Bethel United Church of Christ, past Commander of VFW Post 5649, served on the board of the Good Shepherd Nursing Home and the Whiteman Air Force Base Community Council. One of his greatest honors was his 2002 induction into the South Dakota Hall of Fame.

Survivors include his wife, Norma, of Sylvia G. Thompson Residence Center, Sedalia, MO; one brother, Elton Alewel, Concordia, MO; one daughter, Holly Korzan (Dunk), Concordia, MO; one son, Rex Alewel (Natalie), Concordia, MO; eight grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 12 step great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Hubert was preceded in death by one brother, Stanley Alewel.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 23, at Bethel United Church of Christ in Concordia, with the Rev. Dr. Alan Gatewood officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 22, at the Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home in Concordia. Burial, with military honors, will be in Bethel United Church of Christ Cemetery.
