Paul Goldschmidt hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning, and the St. Louis Cardinals’ pitchers made it hold up in a 1-0 win over the Kansas City Royals on Monday at Busch Stadium.

Monday’s game was the make-up of a rain out earlier this season.

Goldschmidt hit his home run off Royals’ starter Zack Greinke, who falls to 0-2.

Steven Matz, who is now 3-1, allowed four hits and struck out four in six innings to get the win. Kodi Whitley struck out two in a perfect seventh, and Nick Wittgren worked a 1-2-3 eighth. Giovanny Gallegos allowed a hit but struck out two in earning the save.

Greinke gave up only three hits and fanned two in six innings.

The two teams open a two-game set at The K on Tuesday night. The Cardinals are scheduled to start Dakota Hudson and the Royals Brad Keller. Pregame begins at 6:30, with game time at 7:10. You can hear the broadcast from the Royals’ Radio Network on KMMO FM 102.9.
