Don Switala, age 74, of Marshall, Mo, passed away on Wednesday, May 4, 2022, at home after his battle with acute myeloid leukemia.  He fought this with faith, hope, determination and Marine Corps valor.  On November 25, 2020, Don received a bone marrow transplant from his granddaughter, Josie, which gave us 18 months more to share good times and memories with Don.

Don was born December 26, 1947, in Kansas City, KS.  He was the son of the late Donald Walter Sr. and Rita Switala.  He remained in Kansas City, KS until his marriage to Myra (Myzie) Best on October 13, 1990.

After serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, Don worked for TWA, the Railroad and retired from General Motors after 30 years when he moved to Marshall, MO to the “Almosta Ranch”.  He was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed the annual deer hunt with his boys.  He also enjoyed fishing, traveling, golfing, hiking, biking and model railroads.  At the age of 40, Don ran a triathlon.

Don is survived by his wife, Myra; sons Bob and Tim (Pam); daughter Melina (Robert); one brother, Richard; sister Nancy Spehar (Dave).  He is also survived by his grandchildren, TJ (Allie), Josie, Megan (Jeff), Madeline; one great grandson, Owen; and numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Judy Haug (Steve).

Don and Myra have attended the First United Methodist Church for over 20 years where he traveled on several mission trips for relief of hurricane and tornado victims.  He also spent many hours volunteering for Habitat for Humanity.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 14, 2022, at First United Methodist Church in Marshall. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, May 13, 2022, at Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home in Marshall. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to First United Methodist Church or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Friends may sign the online register book at www.campbell-lewis.com.
