A second man has been charged with felonies after authorities responded to the report of gunshots on June 10, 2021, in the Bates City area.

According to a probable-cause statement, a witness said Gavin J. Carman, of Bates City, and Jesse Joe Morris, of Kansas City, were involved in an argument. The witness reported Carman pulled out a black handgun from his waistband and fired one shot into the air. The witness said Morris then pulled a handgun from his waistband and fired a shot into the air, as well. Both subjects fled the scene prior to the arrival of law enforcement.

Court documents say Morris was charged with felonies unlawful use of a weapon-discharging and unlawful use of a weapon-exhibiting in April. He was arraigned, pleaded not guilty, posted surety bond, and is due back in court on May 18.

Carman is charged with felonies for unlawful use of a weapon- discharging and unlawful use of a weapon- exhibiting. Bond is set at $7,500 cash or surety.

Carman was arraigned while in custody and pleaded not guilty on May 10. His counsel-status hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 1, at Lafayette County Circuit Court.
