A wreath laying ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 28 to commemorate the restoration and desegregation of the Cambridge Cemetery.
Stan Hinnah has been leading the overall project to restore the cemetery. Hinnah says the history of Cambridge Cemetery dates back to the 1800s.
The cemetery was segregated and only half of the land was maintained. Citizens in the area started to clean up the cemetery in the early 2000s.
The cemetery is being maintained with the help of volunteers. Hinnah says desegregating the cemetery is an important step.
Hinnah said they are taking two wreaths and combining them into one to signify the desegregation of the cemetery during the wreath laying ceremony.
Cambridge Cemetery is located 2.5 miles north of Gilliam on Route PP.
