The Marshall Owls ended the 2022 high school baseball season on a disappointing note Thursday as they lost 13-3 in five innings to Kennett in the Class 4 third-place contest held at Ozark.

The Owls had just dropped a tough 6-5, 11-inning semifinal decision to Southern Boone the night before. That was a battle in which Marshall never trailed until the final pitch of the game.

However, against Kennett, the Owls never led as the Indians banged out 12 hits and scored every turn at bat except for the fifth inning.

Kennett scored a run in the first, six in the second, four in the third and two in the fourth.

Down 13-0 after three and a half innings, the Owls scored once in the fourth and twice in the fifth, but failed to keep the game from ending early.

Marshall had three hits in the game- with Zach Martinez pounding a solo home run in the fourth to break up the shutout bid. Coy Smith had a hit, a run scored and an RBI, and Loga Deal added a base hit.

Finishing fourth in the state as they did in their only other Final Four appearance in 2012, the Owls’ final record was 12-19. Kennett had entered post-season play three weeks ago ranked No. 1 in Class 4. The Indians ended up 25-6 overall.

In the Class 4 championship game, Southern Boone broke open a 2-2 tie by scoring four in the sixth and two more during the seventh to beat Logan-Rogersville 8-3.

The Eagles finished off a 34-2 season, while Logan-Rogersville wound up 26-8.
