A Waverly man has been arrested after two traffic crashes in a span of five days.

According to the Waverly Police Department, on June 3, a Waverly Police officer responded to a vehicle collision that occurred on Old Bridge Street near Commercial Street. Upon arrival, it was found that one of the drivers, identified as 24-year-old Zachery Johnson had driven through a stop sign and struck another vehicle. Johnson did not have insurance for his vehicle nor a valid driver’s license at the time of the crash. A police report was taken for the crash, and this incident was to be referred to the Lafayette County Prosecutor’s Office for criminal charges.

On Tuesday, June 7, before the initial incident could be referred to the prosecutor, another vehicle collision was reported in Waverly, this time at the Waverly Marina/boat ramp. An officer responded and found the same black Chrysler passenger car that was involved in the other collision was now resting on the hillside of the Missouri River with no one around. A tow truck was contacted, and while waiting for its arrival, Johnson walked back down to the crash scene and claimed he was not the driver. Johnson began arguing with law enforcement, and when handcuffing was attempted, he resisted arrest. A scuffle ensued, and Johnson eventually was secured in handcuffs and transported to the Lafayette County Jail.

The Lafayette County Prosecutor’s Office filed criminal charges against Johnson for the two incidents: two counts of felony driving while suspended/revoked; failure to maintain financial responsibility – misdemeanor; and misdemeanor resisting/interfering with arrest, detention or stop. His total bond is $25,000 cash or surety.
