On Monday, June 27, an Amtrak train traveling from Los Angeles to Chicago struck a dump truck that was on the tracks in rural Chariton County. Four persons- the truck driver and three passengers on the train- died in the crash and subsequent derailment.

During her second press conference, National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Chair Jennifer Homendy explained the train was traveling within the speed limit before and at the time of the crash.

Homendy described the crossing as being very steep.

Homendy said investigators are looking at several factors that could have led up to the crash.

Homendy said there will not be another press conference. But she said a preliminary report of the findings will be released in about two weeks.
