The Missouri Department of Natural Resources encourages people to spend time outdoors by offering tips that can help the environment and save money.

· Reduce, reuse and recycle: When it comes to setting the picnic table, use reusable flatware, silverware and cloth napkins. Fitted sheets in fun prints can double as table clothes and using a Frisbee as a plate is a fun way to get the kids involved.
· Tread lightly: If you are traveling to your destination, make sure your vehicle is properly maintained and don’t over pack. Leaving those extra ‘kitchen sink’ items at home can lighten your load and save on fuel consumption.
· Make sure your grilling is on point: If the fire needs a little help getting started, use a chimney starter rather than lighter fluid to get it going. This cuts down on chemicals released into the air. Check out local farmer’s market for healthy, fresh food items that can satisfy even the pickiest of guests. Buying local cuts down on transportation costs and helps the local economy.

Following these tips and others can alleviate unnecessary waste in landfills and help people to have a blast this summer. Visit dnr.mo.gov/waste-recycling/reduce-reuse-recycle/green-tips-every-occasion for more green tips for every occasion.
