Today is Independence Day, and authorities urge residents to be safe while using all fireworks while celebrating.

Statistics say, on average, 243 persons go to the emergency room every day with fireworks-related injuries in the month surrounding July 4.

Safety officials offer tips to help everyone avoid injuries, including:

– Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks.

– Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying and using them.

– Keep a bucket of water or garden hose handy in case of a fire or other mishap.

– Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly.

– Never try to relight or pick up fireworks that have not fully ignited.
