The Saline County Assessor says the county commission is doing a disservice to the taxpayers.
According to a letter on behalf of Jessica Goodman, the county commission has cut her budget in half. By state statute, her office is supposed to receive 1 percent of the ad valorem property tax collections to be deposited into the county’s assessment fund. Despite Goodman bringing the statute to the commission’s attention in February, the Assessor’s budget is still half of what state statute requires.
By state statute, Goodman also says her office should have nine employees and currently has only five full-time employees and one part-time employee.
In addition, Goodman says she allowed her employees to have a paid day off on June 10, 2022. But after Goodman approved the time off, the commission ordered the Human Resources Manager to change her employees’ time by removing the paid time off and forced the Assessor’s office’s employees to use a sick or vacation day, and removed pay all together for two of her employees.
Through her attorney, Goodman says she is not seeking to be litigious, and is hoping these issues can be resolved amicably, but there has been no action taken since February. The attorney has instructed Goodman to request a correction to her employees’ next check, and accrued time for their pay period to accurately reflect their paid day off.
