Officials in the City of Odessa have been notified about some planned power outages scheduled to take place this weekend.

City officials say Evergy has reached out indicating it needs to take two 30-minute outages this weekend so that it can make continued repairs and/or replacements as a result of the July 6 outage.

The two overall outages are expected to be an hour each.

The first outage is scheduled to begin at 11 p.m. Saturday and is planned to be back on at midnight. Evergy will be working on its system in between the two outages.

The second outage is scheduled to take place from 4:30 to 5:30 a.m. Sunday, which is when Evergy expects to be done with the work and will need the system cold to hook it back up.

City officials say the city will shed its load (easier on the system and infrastructure) which takes approximately 15 minutes. Evergy will cut power for 30 minutes; and then the city will slowly bring the circuits back up (approximately 15 minutes).

During the 30 minutes that Evergy has the system cold, the city’s electric team will be working within its substation doing replacements and additional clean ups from the July 6 outage. The city hopes to get these done to avoid needing to take any additional outages in the foreseeable future.

City officials say, “We did have lengthy discussion surrounding the heat expected for the weekend, but in the end have all agreed that with the ongoing heat in the forecast, getting the permanent repairs made is necessary to take the proper precautions to avoid unplanned outages while the system is going to be under extreme loads due to the summer temperatures. The selected times are because of the predicted ambient temperatures during overnight hours and to have as minimal of an impact on businesses and residents. We assure you our teams will work as diligently as possible and lots of work has gone on behind the scenes this week to make sure everything is in place to avoid any unexpected issues.”
