Missouri-American Water Company (MAWC) has filed an application with the Missouri Public Service Commission seeking a certificate of convenience and necessity to install, own, operate, control, manage and maintain a water and sewer system in Pettis County, in and around the City of Smithton.

According to the application, to provide service to the proposed area, MAWC proposes to purchase all of the water and sewer assets of the currently unregulated system of the City of Smithton.

The application states MAWC proposes to provide water service pursuant to the existing rates currently applicable to MAWC’s Warrensburg service area until such time as the rates are modified according to law. MAWC proposes to provide sewer service pursuant to the existing rates currently applicable to MAWC’s Pettis County service area until such time as the rates are modified according to law.

According to the application, the City of Smithton approved the sale of its existing water and sewer systems in an election held on April 6, 2021.

Applications to intervene and participate in these cases must be filed no later than September 12, 2022, with the Secretary of the Missouri Public Service Commission or by using the Commission’s Electronic Filing and Information System (EFIS) at www.psc.mo.gov.

MAWC provides water service to approximately 475,000 customers in Missouri. It also provides sewer service to approximately 18,000 customers in the state. According to the application, the City of Smithton currently serves approximately 220 water accounts and 220 sewer accounts.
