A 45-year-old Sedalia man has been charged with felonies after an eleven-hour standoff with authorities.
According to a release from the Sedalia Police Department, officers were dispatched to the report of a disturbance involving a firearm and three individuals. One individual reportedly escaped and turned the firearm over to authorities.
Authorities from the Sedalia Police Department, Pettis County Sheriff’s Office, and Missouri State Highway Patrol surrounded the residence and attempted to make contact when a woman in the residence told authorities there was a bomb or incendiary device inside.
Authorities began negotiating with the suspect, who was identified as Charles Morris, and learned that he was allegedly holding a 46-year-old woman against her will.
A few hours later, Morris appeared to have passed out, according to the victim. Authorities helped the victim escape and MSHP Bomb Squad safely disposed of the incendiary device. Morris was arrested by MSHP SWAT.
Morris had two active arrest warrants. Court documents says Morris is charged with felonies for kidnapping in the first degree, assault in the second degree, unlawful possession of an illegal weapon, and unlawful use of a weapon. Morris was also charged with statuary sodomy and two counts of child molestation in the third degree on the other warrant. Bond was set at $100,000 cash only.
Morris was arraigned on August 25. His next hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 13 at Pettis County Circuit Court.
