A sonic boom surprised many in mid-Missouri on Wednesday, August 24.

The sound heard across Mid-Missouri was likely caused by an F-15 breaking the sound barrier. However, it was not caused by Whiteman Air Force Base aircraft.

Instead, a spokesperson from The Boeing Communications Department confirmed that a normal customer acceptance flight of an F-15, operated by a U.S. Government aircrew, took place on August 24. Boeing is required to conduct these flights under its contract with the U.S. Government, and they are flown in accordance with procedures approved by the U.S. Government.

The boom was heard by residents throughout the KMMO listening area.
