According to a news release, The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will conduct an operation to seek ways to manage invasive carp populations on the Grand River. From September 12 to September 16, MDC is scheduled to close the Brunswick Access and lower eight miles of the river to boat traffic. The project is being conducted in conjunction with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Crews will be netting and removing the carp from the river and a commercial fishing operation will process the fish for various products. The nets will be placed at both ends of the fish removal section.
The project’s goals include testing methods for removing large numbers of carp from a river to see if it is commercially feasible and also to test if the removal boosts available food and habitat for native fish on the Grand River.
The removal will target silver, bighead, grass and black carp. Any other species captured will be weighed, measured and released.
During the operation, The Grand River above the lower eight miles will still be accessible. The Missouri River will also be accessible by boaters via the Miami, Waverly, Dalton and Glasgow accesses. Bank fishing will still be allowed in the the lower eight miles.
