Marshall Municipal Utilities (MMU) is scheduled to conduct a free chlorine conversion on Tuesday, October 18 that will coincide with the annual fire hydrant flushing. A “free chlorine conversion” occurs when a water system switches its disinfectant process from combined chlorine to free chlorine. This is a routine practice that assists with maintaining a healthy water distribution system for MMU and water districts in the area that purchase water from MMU.
The conversion is scheduled to last about four weeks, after which MMU will return to the combine chlorine process. During this time, water may taste or smell differently. This is normal and does not affect safety of the water. If the water appears cloudy, simply keep the water running for a few minutes and it should clear up.
The annual fire hydrant flushing is scheduled to begin Sunday, October 23. Customers are urged not to wash delicate white fabrics or clothing that may become stained during the washing cycle while MMU crews are flushing hydrants.
