The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) has confirmed cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in Chariton, Jackson, St. Charles and St. Louis counties this fall.

Due to ongoing waterfowl hunting seasons, waterfowl hunters should properly dispose of harvest waste. After cleaning, hunters are encouraged to place remains in trash bags and dispose of through trash collection or a permitted landfill. Bald Eagles and other raptors are particularly susceptible to avian influenza.

Hunters should also be aware that it is possible to transport avian influenza viruses on boats, waders or other equipment. Allowing hunting equipment to dry will reduce the chance of spreading.

There is a risk of spillover from wild birds into domestic poultry and then back again resulting in further spread.

MDC reminds individuals to always cook meat to an internal temperature of 165 degrees to kill the virus.

Situation updates are available at the MDC website at https://short.mdc.mo.gov/4GX.
