Born November 2, 1928, in rural Corder, Mo., Velma was the daughter of the late Edward Nienhueser and Anna Wagner Nienhueser.  On November 18, 1928, she was received into God’s kingdom of grace by the washing of Holy Baptism at Trinity Lutheran Church in Alma, Mo. by the Rev. A. H Grieve.  Her sponsors were Lydia Wagner and Mrs. Herman Steffens (proxy was Mrs. Ida Kalthoff).

Her elementary education was received at Trinity Lutheran Grade School.  Here she received instruction in the chief doctrine of the church and on April 18, 1943, she renewed her baptismal vow through the Rite of Confirmation by Rev. A. H. Grieve.  Her confirmation verse was Psalm 37:5, “Commit thy way unto the Lord, trust also in Him and He shall bring it to pass”.  She attended Alma High School, graduating there in 1947.

She was united in marriage on August 1, 1948, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Alma, Mo by Rev A. H. Grieve to Omar Hinck, who preceded her in death on January 13, 2011.  Their wedding text was Psalm 118:24, “This is the day the Lord hath made, rejoice and be glad in it”, a text loved and remembered in many ways through their married life and devotions.

Velma enjoyed working with her husband and family on their farm northwest of Concordia until they moved to Concordia in December 1991.  She was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church for 74 years and her exemplary faith was an example to her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all who knew Velma.  She was active in the community and enjoyed Bible classes, Ladies Aid & LWML, making baptismal napkins, Altar Guild, Braille, 4-H Club activities when her children were small, American Legion Auxiliary, was a charter member of the Concordia Veteran Area Walkway, Good Shepherd Home Auxiliary, Red Cross, and helping with activities at the Good Shepherd Home where needed.  She also enjoyed family celebrations, trips eating out and playing cards with her many friends.

They were blessed with 4 children who all survive her death: Barbara Wehmeyer of Lake St. Louis, Mo.; Eunice and husband Rex Brown of Lee’s Summit, Mo.; Paul Hinck and wife Crystal (Becker) of Independence, Mo.; Jean and husband Paul Niewald of Lake St. Louis, Mo.; nine grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; one sister, Gertrude Rolf of Higginsville, Mo.,  one brother, Roland Nienhueser and wife Bonnie of Alma, Mo.; and sister-in-Law, Vera Hinck of Concordia, Mo.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
