The Marshall Police Department would like to warn merchants and area residents of movie prop money being passed as actual currency.

Over the weekend of December 10 and 11, Marshall Police received reports of movie prop money being passed as legal tender. The Marshall Police Department has identified movie prop money in $10 denominations in cases filed.

Movie prop money can have the same look as actual currency, but in most instances, does not have the same texture as actual cash. In addition, prop money bills usually have smaller dimensions than actual currency.

The Marshall Police Department strongly encourages merchants and residents to carefully inspect all denominations of currency before completing a cash transaction.

Print on movie prop money usually reads: “For Motion Picture Use Only” along the top, front face of the bill. The word “Copy” is normally printed on both sides of the bill. “This Note is Not Legal Tender” or “For Motion Picture Use Only” is normally printed on one side of the bill. The president’s name is often omitted or changed and serial numbers are often the same on movie prop money.

It is not illegal to possess movie prop money, however passing the money could be classified as a felony offense or federal crime depending on use.

Anyone who receives suspected prop money or illegally manufactured currency should contact the Marshall Police Department at 660-886-7411.
