The Missouri Public Service Commission has approved an application filed by the Missouri-American Water Company (MAWC) which grants MAWC a certificate of convenience and necessity (CCN) to provide water and sewer service in Pettis County, in and around the City of Smithton.

To provide water and sewer service to the area, MAWC proposes to purchase all of the water and sewer utility assets of the City of Smithton system. On April 6, 2021, voters approved the sale of the City of Smithton systems to MAWC.

The Commission approved the CCN determining:
1) There is a need for the service;
2) MAWC is qualified to provide the proposed service;
3) MAWC has the financial ability to provide the service;
4) MAWC’s proposal is economically feasible; and
5) The service promotes the public interest.

MAWC has proposed charging water customers a $9.00 per month customer charge plus $6.2469 per 1,000 gallons of water used and $44.03 a month for sewer service. These rates would remain in effect until they are modified according to law.

MAWC provides water service to approximately 475,000 customers in Missouri. It also provides sewer service to approximately 18,000 customers in the state. The City of Smithton serves approximately 220 water and sewer accounts.
