The Marshall Police Department arrested several subjects after a fraud investigation on Thursday, February 23.

According to the department, authorities received information from a local bank it had received a fraudulent payroll check, and the person who was attempting to cash the check was still at the bank on Tuesday, February 21. Officers were dispatched to the bank to investigate.

Officers conducted an investigation and arrested a Columbia man who attempted to pass a fraudulent payroll check.

Officers continued their investigation and received information from several banks from Marshall, Sedalia, and Higginsville, stating numerous fraudulent payroll checks had been cashed that exceeded a total of tens of thousands of dollars.

During the investigation, officers obtained the descriptions of two men who were involved with the man arrested earlier, along with their vehicle information.

Marshall officers, while on patrol, observed the vehicle from their bank investigation occupied with the male subjects who met the description provided on Thursday, February 23. The vehicle fled from officers and was soon located near Lincoln and Edna Street. When officers approached the vehicle, the occupants fled, and a foot pursuit began. Officers pursued the men, and one was caught near the vehicle, and placed under arrest while the other man continued to flee on foot but was later located at the Marshall Plaza and arrested.

The men were transported to the Marshall Police Department, where they are awaiting formal charges.
