The City of Sedalia’s annual asphalt mill and overlay program is scheduled to begin on April 3, 2023 and will improve 4.74 centerline miles of city streets during the 2023 construction season.

The project areas are detailed in the map and include City projects in red and a project being coordinated between the City and the local Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) district in blue.

Street crews working on the mill and overlay program will routinely work from 6 a.m. until 4 p.m. from Monday through Thursday. However, three projects, U.S. Highway 50 from South Massachusetts to Thompson Avenue; West Main Street from Industrial Road to Oak Grove Lane; and Clinton Road from West 32nd Street to South Grand Avenue, will be completed during night time hours to avoid heavy truck traffic that routinely use these streets during daytime hours. Night work hours will be from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. During scheduled work hours, one lane of the street will be unavailable for travel and parking including exiting from driveways and garages.

Residents will want to plan alternate parking, such as in an adjacent alley not entering the construction zone for exiting or along nearby side streets while work is being completed in front of their driveways or where street parking is normally used. Routinely, streets can be driven on soon after paving takes place and as soon as traffic control devices have been removed by Public Works. Signs will be posted along the affected roadways the week prior to work commencing on that street. There will be a period of time that driveways will not be usable in the construction zone.

This mill and overlay program targets streets that would benefit from being milled and having an asphalt overlay of two or three inches applied to extend the life of the street. The Public Works Department manages the program which includes milling/grinding the existing pavement surface and replacing the asphalt to provide a safer and smoother ride. The asphalt overlay program is part of the City’s yearly street maintenance activity, which is budgeted for $1,454,000 during the 2023 construction season.
