The Smith-Cotton High School chapter of HOSA, a global student organization that promotes career opportunities in the health industry, had 17 students finish in the Top 5 in their events at the state competition, with 13 advancing to the International Leadership Conference in June in Dallas.

Taking first place in their events at the HOSA State Leadership Conference March 27-28 in Rolla were Alex Rice in Health Informatics, Jeffthan Glaster in Medical Assisting, and Bailee Spencer in Dental Science. Annie Mills was second in Family Medicine Physician, with Alyssa Gear (Medical Spelling), Mackenzie Allison (Clinical Specialty) and Skylar Green (Dental Science) each finishing third. All advance to the international competition, with Glaster also advancing in Healthcare Issues Exam by finishing in the top 10 percent.

Also advancing to the ILC in Dallas:

• Laissa Barillas, top 10 percent in Healthcare Issues Exam
• Jacelyn Lancaster, top 25 percent in Healthcare Issues Exam
• Valeria Juan, top 25 percent in Healthcare Issues Exam
• Ellie Kimbrough, top 25 percent in Healthcare Issues Exam
• Eva Nandho, top 25 percent in Healthcare Issues Exam

At the HOSA International Leadership Conference in Dallas, students will have the opportunity to compete again in their events as well as do the following:
• attend a health expo where students can talk to staff from medical schools and health related programs from colleges and universities across the U.S.
• attend health related educational symposiums
• interact & network with 10,000+ HOSA members from across the U.S., Puerto Rico, Canada, China and South Korea
• listen to motivational speakers at the Opening Session and Award Session
