Susan Schien Callis, age 82, of Sedalia, died peacefully Saturday, April 8, 2023, surrounded by family.

Mrs. Callis was born December 3, 1940 in Sedalia, the daughter of William A. and Naomi Taknsley Schien. On June 30, 1962, at First Christian Church in Sedalia, she married Donald G. Callis who preceded her in death on May 16, 1994.

A life long resident of Sedalia, Mrs. Callis graduated from Smith-Cotton High School in 1958. She graduated from the University of Missouri in 1962.  At the university, she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma women’s fraternity and was recognized as a fifty year alumna of KKG in 2009. She taught English at Smith-Cotton High School. Mrs. Callis was an Elder and active member of Broadway Presbyterian Church, serving in various positions through the years.

Active in the community, Mrs. Callis was past president of: Chapter BB, P.E.O., Sorosis, Melita Day Child Development Center Board of Directors, Sedalia Symphony Society Board of Directors, State Fair Community College Foundation Board of Directors and Heard Memorial Club House Board of Directors. She was a life member of Bothwell Regional Health Center Auxiliary, member of Sedalia Symphony Orchestra for more than 30 years, a former board member and president of the Golden Key Scholarship Fund Board of Directors at the University of Missouri, and a member of Sedalia Women’s Exchange.

Mrs. Callis was the proud mother of Melissa Callis Barkyoumb and her husband Michael of Tulsa, OK and David W. Callis and his wife Elizabeth of Sedalia as well as devoted grandmother of five grandchildren: Sarah Schien Lucas (Tyler Jackson Lucas), Grace Elizabeth Root (Justin Craig Root), David Brooks Barkyoumb, Anna McKean Callis and Donald Boyd Callis.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 12, 2023 at Broadway Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Robert Hughes officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until service time Wednesday at Broadway Presbyterian Church.

A private burial will be held in High Point Cemetery, Hughesville.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Broadway Presbyterian Church Foundation or the Schien Family Scholarship at State Fair Community College, in care of McLaughlin Funeral Chapel.
