John Woodford and three relievers scattered eight hits, Nolan Gorman drove in two runs, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0 on Friday night.

Woodford gave up seven hits in 5 1/3 innings but only one for extra bases, a double by Austin Hedges leading off the fifth. He retired the next three batters to escape that jam.

Zach Thompson (1-0) worked 1 2/3 innings, striking out four, Drew VerHagen was perfect in the eighth, and Giovanny Gallegos followed suit in the ninth for his first save.

Nolan Arenado went 3-for-3 with a walk. He hit a one-out single in the sixth and later scored on Gorman’s single, ending a 14-inning scoring drought for the Cardinals against the Pirates.

St. Louis added two runs off reliever Duane Underwood Jr. in the eighth. Willson Contreras and Gorman both had RBI singles. Gorman finished 3-for-4.
