A Marshall man has been charged with multiple felonies after fleeing authorities on Tuesday, May 9, 2023.

According to a probable cause statement, the Saline County Sheriff’s Department was notified Robert Benham, who according to authorities has an active warrant for felony offenses, was present at a Marshall convenience store.

A Saline County Sheriff’s Deputy located Benham on a bicycle and observed that Benham had failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Vest and Salt Pond. After failing to stop, the deputy activated his lights and Benham fled east through the Bueker Middle School parking lot and to the track area. Benham was located near the track and a foot pursuit ensued.

The Sheriff’s Deputy located Benham and ordered him to lie on the ground, to which he did not comply. After placing Benham in handcuffs, the deputy located a zip lock bag containing a crystalized substance. The substance later allegedly tested positive for the presence of methamphetamine. After transporting Benham to the Saline County Jail, a search of Benham’s backpack revealed a crystalized substance that also allegedly tested positive for methamphetamine, along with a digital scale, glass smoking device and a knife with a set of rings consistent with a brass knuckle.

Benham has been charged with felonies for delivery of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest and a misdemeanor for unlawful possession of an illegal weapon.

Bond was set at $15,000 cash or surety.

Benham had an initial arraignment on Wednesday, May 10, 2023 and has a counsel status hearing scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, May 19, 2023 at Saline County Circuit Court.
