
The St. Louis Cardinals split a doubleheader with the Washington Nationals, losing the first game 7-5 in ten innings, and winning the second 9-6.
Friday’s game was postponed due to weather after several innings. Both teams had to use their bullpens extensively as starters Miles Mikolas and Trevor Williams were unavailable after tossing several innings Friday night.
The Nationals took the lead in the tenth with an RBI single from Lane Thomas. Washington scored another run after Ildemaro Vargas grounded into a double play. St. Louis was unable to answer and fell 7-5.
Brendan Donovan, Willson Contreras, and Lars Nootbar all homered for St. Louis. The Cardinals batted one for six with runners in scoring position.
In game two, the St. Louis offense came out more aggressive. The Cardinals scored four runs in the second, three in the fifth, and one each in the sixth and eighth.
Nolan Arenado hit his 20th homer of the season. Alec Burleson also went deep.
Steven Matz got the start for the Cardinals. He went 4 1/3 and allowed four runs. Dakota Hudson got the win in relief, tossing 3 1/3 scoreless innings. Genesis Cabrera finished things off to help St. Louis split the doubleheader.
