Steven Matz pitched a quality start, Tommy Edman hit two home runs, and the St. Louis Cardinals earned a split in the I-70 series with a 5-4 win over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday, August 12.
Matz has continued to impress since being inserted back into the starting rotation in July. He tossed six innings, allowing two runs on four hits, while striking out five.
Cole Ragans gave up four runs over five innings for Kansas City, who fell to 38-81 on the season.
Tommy Edman hit two home runs on the day, including a two-run shot in the second, and a solo shot in the eighth. Nolan Arenado drove in a run with a double and Willson Contreras had an RBI single.
The Royals made it interesting by scoring runs in the eighth and ninth to pull within a run, but Arenado ended the ballgame with a double-play to end the Kansas City rally.
Nelson Velasquez hit a two run home off of Matz in the third inning.
