An Odessa man has been charged with felonies for stealing and burglary after an incident on September 5, 2023.

According to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a residence in reference to a burglary call. The victim reportedly used a homemade spike strip in a known location where people trespass his property, which popped the tires of a trespassing vehicle with two occupants. The victim stated he could see several items inside the vehicle belonging to him.

Authorities made contact with the two occupants, who denied stealing anything and claimed they were collecting scrap metal. Gerald Sanders was arrested and taken into custody.

Deputies searched the vehicle, and located a small bag with methamphetamine and a glass pipe. They recovered the stolen property, which included a lawn mower, flood lights, a horseshoe set, and miscellaneous wiring and copper tubing. The vehicle was also reportedly stolen out of Kansas City.

Court documents say Sanders is charged with felonies for burglary in the second degree, stealing, and possession of a controlled substance. He was also charged with a misdemeanor for unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. No bond has been warranted.

A hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 13, at Lafayette County Circuit Court.
